William asked:

I’m taking a weeks trip to Colorado in two weeks (May 13th) and I have no idea where to go. I really want to see more of the mountains, trees and rivers/lakes. I heard that Trail Ridge Rd was the way to go but it sounds like it won’t be open yet. Any help I could get would be awesome. I have a fiancee recovering from a broken pelvis so I’m limited to driving and no hiking. Thanks.

can I find black massage stones in the Colorado’s nature?

Alexandra G asked:

I’ve been trying to find the black basalt stones while hiking in colorado. They are really slick and black and are usually heated and used for the hot stone massage.
Does anyone know, where in Colorado I could go to find these? They’re sooooo expensive in retail!

im planning a july family trip to colorado. thinking about Creede, Pagosa Springs or South Fork. Which town is the prettiest and has the most activites ie. rafting, horse back riding and hiking? I also am looking for a small cabin for 3 nights that is around $85 to $100 a night. Any suggestions where to stay by the river?

What is the highest elevation that is safe to hike in the Colorado Rockies?

habaceeba asked:

It’s early June and I am itching to go fly fishing in the high alpine lakes and streams. I can look out my window and see that the peaks (Indian Peaks) are still covered with snow. Is it safe to hike and fish above 12,000′ this time of year? How high could I possible go without snowshoes? How deep is the snow on the peaks? Are there any online resources that track this type of data? Thank you for your attention.

Winter Backpacking in New Zealand?

winter mountain hiking
Kate asked:

My bf and I are doing a bit of world exploration this summer (June-Aug/Sept) and NZ is one of our longest stops.
We both love camping, biking, hiking, live music (esp. local or folk) and cultural events/sights.

With our interests in mind, is there a specific region that would be able to give us the best NZ experience in 2 weeks? A few days of online research has shown me that travel from north to south island is pretty difficult/expensive, even on train and bus. If we stick with one area, we’d also love to rent out bikes. How feasible are good day trips on bikes?

Keep in mind that we’re from Seattle, so rain, coffee,
mountains, volcanoes, moderate cold and ferries don’t phase us.

And just to make it more interesting, our goal budget is pretty much $0. Other than splurging for a bungee jump (Just one of those things I must do), we’re trying to use only camping, mountain huts and couchsurfing to survive. Any cheap/good food tips?

(PS: Are the Waitomo Caves overrated?)

Thank you!

Do you think the media is over doing it about these lost hikers?

winter mountain hiking
Jessica - AKA - Carolina Girl asked:

It’s really bad that those hikers have got lost and I really do hope they find them, but they are expert hikers and they took the risk of hiking up a mountain in winter, and now hundreds of rescuers who have families of their own, are risking their lives to try and find these people and this has been all over the news networks non stop all day. THREE EXPERT hikers are lost on a mountain and could possibly be dead and are getting more news coverage than an American solider killed in Iraq ever will.

Have you ever been to Maine?

n.t. asked:

I live in Maine and really like it. You can go to the beaches in the summer (only like10 min. away), the mountains to ski in the winter, and hiking in the fall+foliage. And Portland is small but feels like a big city.
Do you like Maine? just wondering.
